NASRA tracks private sector and state & local government employment on a monthly basis. Data is provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and is compiled by NASRA staff.

Latest Update (May 2013)

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that state and local governments gained 11,000 jobs in May 2013, with all gains recognized among local governments. Since peaking in August 2008 state and local governments have shed 701,000 jobs, or approximately 3.54 percent of their total. By comparison private sector employment increased in May by 178,000 jobs. May 2013 marked the 39th straight month of private sector job increase. Since peaking in January 2008 private sector jobs are down by about 1.62 percent of their total.
